The 1st international symposium on sectional and imaging anatomy, namely the fifth international symposium on anatomical sciences which was sponsored by Chinese Society for Anatomical Sciences and presented by Shandong Society for Anatomical Sciences, Shandong University and Qingdao University was held in the beautiful coastal city of Tsingtao from December 15 to 18, 2007. The meeting, which has the theme of "exploration and innovation as well as clinical application of sectional and imaging anatomy" with "cross, fusion, open, share" for the purpose, discussed research progress, clinical application and development direction of sectional and imaging anatomy thoroughly.

As the chairman of the meeting, Professor Liu Shuwei presided over the opening ceremony, who is the executive director of Chinese Society for Anatomical Sciences and the chairman of professional committee of Sectional Imaging Anatomy. Professor Zhang Shaoxiang made an opening speech, who is the vice president of Chinese Society for Anatomical Sciences and the vice President of Third military medical university. Professor Victor M. Spitzer of University of Colorado delivered a warm speech and thought highly of this conference.

More than 110 scientific research workers of anatomy, medical imaging and computer science attended the meeting from China, the United States, Germany, South Korea and Hong Kong. The meeting received 54 papers in English, of which the content involved sectional and imaging anatomy of human body structure, study of digitalization and virtualization, the production technology of human section, the research of molecular biology, cell biology, histology, gross anatomy, morbid anatomy and experimental morphology closely related to diagnosis and treatment of diseases. In the conference, 10 experts made invited reports and more than 20 people made special reports.
